Smokepaw splashed his paws into the water, chest pressed close onto the mostly dry stone. He was careful not to splash too far and get any onto his clanmates. They should be grateful he wasn't under any paws, and instead just in the water. Maybe the water around the Turtle Steps was more used to kits splashing around in it, but Smokepaw didn't care. He just kept right on amusing himself in the cold water.
Besides, it was fun. Cold, but fun. His whiskers drooped with the weight of the droplets that hung from them, and his ears had a fine sprinkle of water on them, as well. He pulled his paws up and sent them both splashing down.
A mistake. The water splashed up a lot higher than he had initially planned, and covered him.
He jumped up, fur puffed from the surprise and the cold, and he bounded across the stones, nearly slipping in his haste.
It was a little silly, to be so taken aback by a simple wave. He hadn't even been soaked. But it had happened. He sat down a ways away from the water and tried to restore his own dignity by giving himself a quick grooming.

Swiftfur had turned the corner to see young Smokepaw grooming himself. 'Oh young Smokepaw' he thought to himself as he noticed the apprentice looked a bit more wet than usual, 'How strange..' he wondered. He went over to Smokepaw.
"Young Smokepaw, are you alright?" Swiftfur mewed softly.
Swiftfur sat down, his tail slightly curled around his legs as he licked his forepaw. He looked at Smokepaw with a curious, but concerned gaze.

Smokepaw shook his fur just as Swiftfur walked over. "Fine," he chirped, his fur all fluffed up from the damp. "I got wet." He practically beamed. "But everything's fine now! How are you, Swiftfur?" he asked his mentor, an interested gleam in his eye. "Heard any news?" He bounced to his paws, not bothering to smooth down his pelt.
"Oh! Oh!" he started, more excitement bubbling to the surface. "Are we going somewhere? I want to go somewhere! Can we?"

Swiftfur smiled at Smokepaw, "I'm quite alright," he stated simply "as for news, we must go on a hunting patrol." Swiftfur gave his shoulder a quick lick, then turned and looked to his apprentice.
"And after we bring back fresh-kill to the clan, I have to go on a patrol." His tail twitched slightly. He wanted to be on guard right now for anything. The howls and the scent the wind had carried, even if it was faint, was overwhelming to bear. Even if they lived in the caves it didn't mean they were safe.
His fur had stood a little on end as he was slowly delving deeper into such negative thoughts. He was starting to have another blank moment again.

"Hunting?" Smokepaw exclaimed, breaking into a quick trot and looping around Swiftfur. "I love hunting!" He wasn't very good at it, being too exciteable, but still! Hunting!
"Can I go with you on that patrol?" he added, stopping in front of his mentor. "I can do that, too! Whatever it is! I can do anything! What's it for?"

Swiftfur looked at his apprentice and admired his eagerness. But at Smokepaw desiring to accompany him to go on a patrol he was unsure of how to tell Smokepaw he couldn't come. It be too dangerous and as eager as the young apprentice was to do almost anything, he could possibly get into trouble.
"It's quite dangerous to go on patrol with me at this time, Smokepaw." He folded one of his ears back nervously. He was pondering the thought of maybe giving his apprentice a challenge to see if he could go on the patrol with him, but he was unsure.
"Come. Let's go hunting." He tried to change the subject as he padded away.

"Awww," Smokepaw whined. "Will you at least tell me how it goes? Pleeeease? I want to know!" He followed doggedly at Swiftfur's heels. "Where are we going? I want to catch a ground squirrel. Can we go where the burrows are? I haven't been there in a long time!" Probably because he kept scaring them back down into the holes so no one could get any. "I'll be quiet this time, I swear!"

"Of course I will tell you how it goes." Swiftfur mewed perking his ears slightly. He pondered where to go though to find some prey. He was considering ground squirrels, but maybe that be too difficult considering how Smokepaw can be a little to overly excited when hunting and freak them out. But maybe it be good practice too.
"I haven't been to the burrows for quite some time either. It would be good practice for you too." He spoke softly to himself, "Let's go catch ground squirrels then."

"Yes!" Smokepaw crowed. "I'm going to catch the biggest ground squirrel." Without waiting for Swiftfur, Smokepaw started towards the cave entrance, fully intent on heading straight towards the burrows. It wasn't that he meant to be disrespectful by rushing ahead, he was just very excited, and ready to go.

Swiftfur chuckled at Smokepaws excitement and picked up pace as he followed his apprentice to the cave entrance. He made his way to the burrows, his ears perked and alert for anything.
"Remember to stay quiet this time, Smokepaw." He reminded his apprentice in a gentle but humorous tone.

"I can be the quietest," Smokepaw insisted in a passable quiet voice, sounding mildly affronted. To prove it, he took the initiative and stalked forward, belly pressed low but not too low.
He would totally catch one this time. Those ground squirrels wouldn't get the best of him, not again. There was one now, in front of him, facing the wrong way. It was stood up, looking around for threats, but it hadn't spotted him yet, thankfully.
With careful steps, Smokepaw crept up on it, fully intent. His tail quivered with the effort of holding in his excitement. There! It was right there! All he had to do was pounce and it was fresh-kill!
He leaped, a little too soon, but he made up for it with a quick hop. The ground squirrel shrieked right before his teeth met in its back and killed it.
"That wasn't my fault!" he wailed, quietly, as he made his way back to Swiftfur. "I was quiet! It wasn't!" Now these parts of the burrows would be useless for catching prey for the rest of the hunting trip.
